Ship Types in Use by Space Navies

For: Vice Admiral Casey Warner
3rd Space Lord
By: Commander Samuel Webster
Minimum Clearance Level: Charlie

This is a general overview of vessels used in a Modern Space Navy. There are two broad types of vessels. Fighters, Small Craft and LACs are used to complement Capital Vessels. There are also Mine Warfare vessels, as Well as Fleet Auxiliaries. Space Fortresses are used for Defensive purposes.

Fighters

Fighters are carried on capital vessels, even some larger Patrol Vessels. They are organized into squadrons of twelve according to type.

1. Interceptors: These are light small fighters that usually only has one pilot. They are lightly armed, lightly shielded and extremely fast. Their roles are to race out and harass the enemy fighter forces before to allow other fighters to be launched.

2. Fleet Fighter: These fighters are used to combat other fighters and protect the capital vessels from other fighters. They are slower than interceptors, but are much more heavily armed, heavily shielded, and generally a lot tougher than interceptors. They can have one or two crewmembers. Some fighters are armed with an aft facing quad laser turret to defend the aft area.

3. Attack Fighters: These are even more heavily armed than Fleet Fighters are. They however have a different purpose as they are used to attack capital ships. They are armed with a large number of medium range anti-ship missiles to use this role. The heavier types have a quad laser turret defending the stern because they are slower and less manoeuvrable than other fighters are. They are heavily shielded.

4. Strike Fighters: These are fighters that are used to support ground troops. They have one or two crew -members. They are armed with small loads of bombs, and Gauss rifles. They do have some defensive armament.

5. Bombers: these are used to deliver heavy payloads with more precision than an orbital bombardment could achieve. They are large and slow and often have a crew of 2 or 3. They are only carried on the largest warships and carriers. They can be used to attack planetary surfaces or other ships.

Light Attack Craft

There are 3 armament "themes"that are used by Space Navies.

1. Missile Light Attack Craft: These LACs usually have a complete missile armament. They do not have capability to carry long-range missiles, but often carry many medium range missiles. They usually have smaller crews due to the lack energy turrets that have to be manned. If they do have an energy armament it is for self-defence only.

2. Gun Light Attack Craft: These have little or no missile armament. They have a large energy armament. They are excellent at short range. They often have 3 or 4 large energy turrets. They have larger crews to man the turrets

3. Balanced Armament: These are a compromise between the other two themes. They are mediocre at all ranges, however they are well enough armed to defend themselves. They are excellent for co-ordinating forces of LACs. They have a crew which approximately 10.

Fleet Small Craft

The fleet uses Landing Craft, Pinnaces and Cutters.
1. Landing Craft (Personnel): These are used to land troops in a combat situation. They carry up to 50 troops. They are armed, but not extremely heavily. They follow Assault Craft to the surface.

2. Landing Craft (Tank): These transport tanks and armoured vehicles. They are sometimes used as assault craft, so they are sometimes heavily armed, with repeaters, rockets and other weaponry. They often carry 5 tanks or other vehicles. They have powerful engines.

3. Landing Craft (Mech): These are used to transport Elementals and Javelins. They are carried only on transports and other Army assaults vessels. They are often used as Paratransports for the special Para battalions. They are often heavily armed.

4. Landing Craft (Assault): These are extremely powerful and heavily armed. They are the first craft down in a hostile environment. They carry small amounts of troops- usually 13 or 25 troops. They often have rockets and PPC turrets.

5. Pinnace: These are the main small craft used to transfer people between ships and other places. They have impulse drive and are relatively long-legged and faster than other small craft. They are usually armed with pulse lasers for self-defence. They can also be armed for troop transport if there are not any Landing Craft.

6. Cutter: These are smaller than Pinnaces. They do not have impulse drive, just thrusters, and are slower and have a shorter range than Pinnaces. They are used for movement between ships and sometimes for landing operations, even though they cannot carry many troops. They are usually unarmed.

Capital Vessels

These are the main forces of any space navy. There are light forces, Ships of the Wall and fleet auxiliaries. They are deployed in large fleets and the larger vessels can carry fighters and LACs. They are organized into
Division- 2 ships
Squadron- 8 ships
Task Force- 2 Squadrons (16 ships)
Battle Fleet- 2 Task forces (32 Ships)
Armada- 2 Battle fleets (64 ships)
Flotilla- 3 Armadas (192 Ships)

1. Corvette (FS): These are small warships. They are commanded by a Lieutenant Commander. They have a crew complement of approximately 150. They are good for patrol and escort duty. They usually have a heavy missile or gun armament. They are extremely fast. They usually do not carry fighters or LACs but some can carry small numbers. Some classes may have missile pods but most don't.

2. Frigate (FF): These are much larger than Corvettes. They are commanded by a Commander and have a crew complement of approximately 1,000. They manage to carry often a squadron of fighters. They use larger weapons than a corvette. They are used in fleet duty as well as patrol and escort. They can be used for scouts in smaller fleets. These usually have missile pods. Anti-Fighter frigates are built to defend larger ships from fighters. They have a much smaller offensive armament, and increased amounts of anti-fighter turrets and weapons.

3. Destroyer (DD): These are larger than Frigates. A Commander or a Captain (J.G.) also commands them. They have a crew complement of 2,000,and a couple of fighter squadrons and possible some LACs. They are also used for both Fleet Duty and escorts. They have 50% more weapons, approximately, than Frigates. They usually use the same size weapons as Frigates. They are also useful as scouts for large fleets. Destroyers often have Gravity projectors, to trap other vessels so that they cannot go to warp.

4. Light Cruiser (CL): These are mid sized warships. They are parts of cruiser squadrons, with CAs, or by themselves in a CL squadron. They could also possibly command task forces used for escort duty. They are commanded by a Captain (J.G.), and have a crew complement of approximately 3,000. They use larger weapons than Frigates or Destroyers. They are also slightly slower accelerating. They carry more weapons, as well. They often carry a marine complement, and a small number of landing craft as well as shuttles and fighters. They are often scouts for larger fleets. They are sometimes used to picket enemy systems to see what is going on inside the system. They are excellent for anti-piracy patrols, as they are fast and tough and are better armed than what is pirates have, usually.

5. Heavy Cruiser (CA): These ships often command escorts of smaller vessels. They have a crew complement of approximately 4,000. A Senior Grade Captain or an exceptional Junior Grade Captain commands them. They are extremely hardy and are often the heaviest vessels in smaller navies. They have the speed to run away from larger vessels, but are fast enough to catch some smaller vessels. They are extremely well armed. They are often the flagships of cruiser squadrons, mixed with CLs. In larger fleets, they, with smaller vessels are used to defend the ships of the wall and BCs and BBs from the enemies' light forces. They are also used for missile defence and support in smaller fleets. They use the same size weapons as CLs, generally but carry more of them.

6. Battlecruiser (BC): These are large vessels. Senior Grade Captains command them, with a crew complement of approximately 5,000. They use heavier weapons than cruisers, and are the flagships of smaller fleets that do not have any ships of the wall. They have a critical role to perform as raiders. They, along with light forces are fast enough to raid a system and get out quickly. In larger fleets, they perform missile defense for the ships of wall, tying into the larger ships tactical net, and shoot down missiles, but they also provide a lot of fire power and are extremely good for commerce raiding.

7. Battleship (BB): These are a compromise between BCs and Ships of the wall. They are too slow to chase after lighter ships, and are not tough enough to lie in the wall of battle. They are not well enough armoured or have enough fire power. They are commanded by Senior Grade Captains and have a crew complement of approximately 7,500. The Imperial Antooine Navy does not use them. They are good for border patrols, and system defence. They use the same size weapons as BCs.

8. Dreadnought (DN): These are the smallest true ships of the wall. They use the largest weapons. With other ships of the wall they lie in the middle of the wall of battle and throw out enormous amounts of fire. Commanded by a Senior Grade Captain, they have a crew of approximately 10,000. They carry many fighters and LACs, as well as many missile pods.

10. Superdreadnought (SD): These are the mainstays of a modern Space Navy. They are huge, and use the largest weapons. They have a crew complement of approximately 15,000, and carry many, many weapons. They also carry LACs and Fighters.

11. Juggernaughts (JN): These are the largest warships ever made. They have a crew complement of up to 21,000. They are not really useful, more of a weapon that built so that it is never used. There are only 2 classes of Juggernaughts built the Antooine Indefatigable Class and the Shinakkan Apocalypse C class. They are slow and unmanoeuvrable. They will probably be decommissioned to provide crew for other, smaller, more useful ships.

12. Carriers (CV/CVA): Carriers are used to transport large numbers of fighters to a battle. They carry many fighters and LACs. They do have a small defensive armament, including missiles and energy weapons. They are important, as fighters can destroy warships.

13. Patrol Vessels (PV): These ships are manned by Reserves, the Border Guard, and by Police services to help keep Antooine Safe. They help with escorting convoys to free up regular Navy vessels to participate in fleet actions. The larger classes can carry LACs and fighters, though many don't.

14. Mine Warfare Vessels (ML/ MS): These ships deal with mines. Mine Layers install mine fields and Minesweepers get rid of mine fields. These are important because mines are important in system defence. They are usually small, with light armaments. They are capable of working anywhere, for short times. They would need other ships to protect them in hostile areas.

Fleet Auxiliary

Auxiliary Vessels are extremely important to a fleet. They keep the fleet moving and support the fleet in its operations. Auxiliary vessels include transports, tenders, tugs, and Medical ships, Salvage vessels, Imperial transports, Repair Ships, Training Vessels and Science Vessels.

1. Transports (AOT/AOR): These transfer people, munitions and anything a fleet needs across space. They support a fleet away from a Starbase. Assault Transports carry troops and tanks and artillery and other supplies for planetary assaults.

2. Tenders (AOR): These take the munitions and supplies from Transports, and then re-supply the warships. They are also used as couriers and messengers.

3. Tugs (TT): Tugs are important because they rescue ships that have been stranded. The larger tugs can tow ships as large as Battlecruisers as fast as Warp by themselves. They are attached to fleets to rescue the cripple, as well as rescue stranded pilots.

4. Medical Ships (MED): These are large wandering hospital ships. They are often converted warships that can hold thousands of patients. Their medical facilities are much better than warships, nearly the same capability as a planetside hospital. They are very important after battle to help the wounded.

5. Salvage Vessel/ Navaids Tender/Search and Rescue (SS/AON/SAR): They wander around collecting scrap. Many have been converted to Navaids Tender. They repair Navigation Satellites, in their large main hold. They can also be used as light mine layers, and Search and Rescue Vessels. The SAR vessels have incredible sensors; to aid in finding ejected pilots and life pods, which have lost their beacons.

6. Imperial Transport (IT): These are used to move members of the Imperial family around the empire. They are large, with good shields and armour, but no weapons. They do carry LACs, though.

7. Repair Ship (AXR): These repair ships when tugs are not around. They would repair a ships inertial compensator, for instance. They are based at Starbases.

8. Training Vessels (AXT): These serve to train future Naval Personnel. They are often old warships that have been decommissioned from the front line. They can hold fighters and LACs from training squadrons. They are attached to the Naval College, and 1 is reserved for the 4th year Midshipmen's "Middy Cruise".

9. Science Vessels (AXS): These investigate scientific phenomenon. They are also used as test vessels for advanced propulsion and other devices. They are incredibly fast and have top notch first line sensor systems. A small number are utilized as Black Ops spy ships for Intelligence Operations

Space Fortresses

These are important as they are used to defend critical areas. They are excellent system defence. The largest fortresses mass more than and are armed more heavily than Dreadnoughts. They do have impulse drive, but have a low acceleration, and they are not supposed to move much. They have incredibly strong shields to counteract the low movement.
